The image shows a person seated outdoors against a tree. The person's upper body and legs are visible. They are in a slightly reclined position with their knees bent and feet on the ground. The person's face is partially obscured by shadows, but their lips, nose, and jawline are visible. They have medium-length hair peeking out from under a wide-brimmed hat. The person wears a long-sleeved coat, trousers, and visible shoes. Tall trees form a canopy above them, and the ground is textured with grass or earth. In the background, there are faint outlines of hills or mountains under a cloudy sky.

A Ceiling with Apollo Presiding over Military and Historical Learning

Anton Kern · 1740s · watercolor, pen and gray ink over traces of black chalk on laid paper ·  Accession ID  2005.80.1

This is a painting of a mythological scene in a wooded landscape. The scene depicts a variety of figures in elaborate dress, engaging in what seems to be a dramatic narrative involving water, swans, and a flowing river or stream. Towards the left, a figure clad in a red robe is reaching out towards another light-clothed figure, with several other figures gathered around them, some holding decorative items. A luxuriant forest background containing large trees with thick trunks and rich foliage is visible. The image conveys movement and interaction, with dynamic poses and drapery in motion. The soft, muted palette and detailed brushwork contribute to an ethereal and serene atmosphere. This is in the style of Nicolas Poussin.
