Five pale-skinned men gather around a rectangular table playing cards and dice against a dark, smoke-gray background in this horizontal painting. Light illuminates the scene dramatically from the upper left, creating bright areas and deep shadows. The two men closest to us play cards. One sits on our side of the table and faces our left in profile, wearing a gleaming, dark, armored breastplate and sleeves over scarlet-red tights. He has a dark brown beard and short, dark hair. He holds his stacked playing cards close to his chest, and he pulls the front one up with a forefinger and thumb as he looks at the man across from him. The young man near the left edge of the composition faces our right, almost in profile, as he half-kneels on his seat. He leans over the table, propped on one elbow. His other hand, closer to us, brushes the underside of his chin as he looks down at his cards. His right cheek and ear are brightly lit and much of the rest of his face cast into dark shadow, though there is a faint suggestion of a goatee around his parted lips. He wears a floppy, feathered cap, a bronze-brown shirt with full sleeves, and dark breeches over gray stockings. A bearded man with a tanned complexion stands behind the young man to our left. He looks toward the other end of the table at the dice players, and holds up a hand with two fingers extended. He wears a pointed metal helmet and holds a tall wooden staff with his other hand, along the left side of the canvas. Wrinkles line his forehead and create creases around his open mouth. Opposite us, two men look down at two small dice on the table. One man stands at the short end of the table to our right, with his right fingertips resting on the table over the dice. He wears a floppy, feathered cap over dark hair, and his brown beard is trimmed. His dark eyebrows are lowered and he has a long, straight nose. His ivory-white shirt has vertical black stripes and shimmers in the light. A metal collar, a piece of armor, rests around his neck and his hips are wrapped in a charcoal-gray cloth before being lost in the shadows under the table. In front of him, seen between the two card players, the fifth man faces the other dice player, leaning with his right hand on the table and holding up his other hand, palm out and fingers outstretched. His shoulder is bare where his cream-colored shirt has slipped down, and he wears a ruby-red, slashed, floppy hat. The light illuminates the back of his shoulder and side of his face, and the rest of his face is shrouded in shadow but we can see his mouth is open.

A bare-chested, blond woman sits sideways on a muscular, large, white bull, who charges into an ocean while three women look on in this horizontal painting. All the people have pale or peachy skin and rosy cheeks. The bull is being pulled to our left by a winged, nude, baby-like putto wading into the water. The putto has pudgy arms, a round tummy, and short, blond, curly hair. He looks back over his shoulder and smiles as he reaches along a garland of leaves and flowers, used to pull the bull. The bull turns his head to look over our left shoulder with bright, golden eyes. His front legs plunge into the azure-blue water. Rings of flowers encircle his short, steel-gray horns. The woman riding atop, Europa, leans across the bull’s neck and one hand clutches one of the bull’s horns. She looks and gestures with her other hand to the group behind the bull, to our right. Europa’s blond hair is woven with a deep pink ribbon. Her eyes are slitted as she looks down her nose, her pink lips open. Pale, shimmering yellow fabric covers her legs over sandaled feet. She sits on a rose-pink cloth that also billows up behind her. She wears two pearl bracelets on her gesturing hand. The three women looking on sit and stand near a tree trunk in a dense wooded area in the lower right quadrant of the painting. Their mouths are open, their hair bound, and they wear flowing robes of bronze orange, royal blue, lavender gray, or pale mint green. One woman has dark brown hair and sits with one elbow propped on a tree root. Her hands are clasped and she wears gold bracelets. Another woman leans across her lap, her arms outstretched toward Europa, her back to us. The third woman stands and leans in behind this pair, also reaching out toward Europa. A deeply shaded rocky ground stretches across the bottom of the canvas, and a leafy tree extends off the top right corner. Dense vegetation becomes lighter and hazier in the distance, to our right. A bright dot of cream white surrounded by coral peach on the ocean’s horizon suggests the sun. In the top half of the picture, towering puffy clouds rise against a topaz-blue sky.

Sitting on a rock and shown from the lap up, an elegantly dressed, light-skinned man holds up a partridge by one leg and sits next to a dog, all against a landscape with trees and a stone manor house in this vertical portrait painting. On the far side of the rock, the man’s legs angle away from us to our right, but he turns his torso to look at us with brown eyes under dark brows. His nose has a bump near the bridge, and his full, pink lips are closed. His rounded cheeks are slightly flushed, and he has a bit of a double chin. His hair curls around his face from a widow’s peak on his forehead, and locks are tied back with a black silk bow. His white shirt is pleated vertically across the front below a high collar, which wraps around his neck. Lace lines the front of the shirt down the chest and the cuffs at the end of puffy sleeves. His camel-brown jacket is lined with topaz blue and edged with silvery lace down the front and at the unbuttoned cuffs. His brown pants are lost in shadow beyond the rock on which he sits. In his raised left hand, on our right, the partridge dangles from one red leg, its brown wings spread and its head hanging back. By the man’s right side and closer to us, the dog is white with a few black spots. It has large floppy ears and a short tail. It crouches on its hind legs, angled to our left, and braces itself on its front paws, looking up at the bird. A second dead bird lies on the rock under the dog’s poised body. A few tufts of plants and grasses grow out of the rock next to the dog’s front feet, and behind the dog and man is a fawn-brown sack and a cylindrical vessel with a spout, a powder horn. Two trees grow beyond the rock, up the left edge of the canvas. To our right, in the distance, two women talk near a low wall. One wears an aquamarine-blue dress and gestures with arm outstretched to our left, and the other, in pale pink, sits looking up at her companion. Beyond, trees line the drive up to the three-story manor house. The middle story is lined with notably tall windows, like a series of French doors. Steel-gray clouds against a few glimpses of turquoise-blue sky fill the top half of the painting above the house. The painting is signed and dated in the lower right corner: “peint par JB. Oudry 1722.”

This painting shows a serene body of water and a rocky coast stretching to the horizon. In the center of the painting, indistinct people gather on a rocky strip near the water wearing clothes in shades of red, blue, and brown. In front of them, closest to us, small tan and brown rocks poke through the still blue water. In the distance on the left are rocky gray mountains and a group of far-away buildings with white walls and red roofs. On the right, the water continues until it reaches a distant shoreline. Fluffy clouds are visible in the wide blue sky above.
