The sculpture depicts a nude human figure standing upright, with both arms raised and bent at the elbows. The figure appears to be in the process of putting on or pulling off a garment over its head. The figure is finely modeled, capturing the contours and proportions of the human form with a sense of fluidity and movement. The sculpture is made of bronze, giving it a patinated surface with a warm brown to greenish color variation. This coloration enhances the naturalistic appearance of the figure, and the textured surface of the material adds depth and dimension to the sculpture. The figure is mounted on a flat, square base that supports the composition. The proportions and posture of the figure make it resemble an average-sized adult in a naturalistic style.

Woman Arranging Her Hair

Edgar Degas · original wax possibly late 1880s/1890s, cast 1920/1962 · copper alloy ·  Accession ID  1985.64.65

The painting shows three people at the beach. On the right is a woman in a green one-shoulder garment with her back to us. She has pale skin and dark hair, and under her green garment is a brighter green outfit similar to a bathing suit. Next to her, on the left, is a man with peach-and-orange skin wearing a dark, one-shoulder outfit. His facial features are geometric and outlined with thick black lines. The man’s body is facing the left, but his head is turned to look at the woman in green. A third person is partially hidden behind these other two. The background includes a blue sky with white clouds and brown rocks in the vibrant, green-blue ocean.

Bathing Scene (The Green Cloak)

Max Beckmann · 1934 · oil on canvas ·  Accession ID  2006.164.1

This painting depicts a game being played on a grassy field. The game is taking place in the central green lawn, with buildings in the distance surrounded by trees. On the lawn are several distant people, with some standing and some running, although the details are hard to make out. The scene has been created using small dots of paint, making everything look slightly blurred. The sky at the top of the painting is light blue with some large white clouds.

Nine oranges and lemons sit in a shallow basket with dark green, spiky branches behind and a pair of cobalt-blue gloves in front in this horizontal still life painting. The scene is painted with long, loose brushstrokes, which are visible throughout. The muted orange and golden yellow fruit are outlined with blue, as is the woven basket in which they sit. The two cypress branches behind and to either side of the basket are painted with sky blue along the stems and long, bristly needles. The gloves sit one atop the other near the lower right corner, and the top glove has three brown stripes down the back. The surface beneath the still life is sand brown, and the pale turquoise background takes up the top third of the composition. The artist signed and dated this with the location in the lower right corner, “Vincent Arles 89.”

Vincent van Gogh · 1889 · oil on canvas ·  Accession ID  2014.18.13

The image shows intersecting lines and shapes on a textured background, creating an abstract composition. Black and blue lines intersect in multiple directions, forming a dense cluster. The surrounding area is filled with smudges and faint traces, enhancing the abstract nature of the artwork.

The painting depicts a busy harbor scene with ships and masts rising into the blue-gray sky. The brushstrokes are loose and impressionistic, in shades of soft grey, brown, and blue, with some pops of red and yellow from indistinct objects. In the distance, more tall masts and a thick smokestack obscure the horizon.

The sculpture features three nude human figures positioned closely together. Two figures are seated and supporting a third figure who is bending over them. The sculpture is rendered in bronze, giving it a dark metallic color with highlights. The figures are smooth and well-defined, with detailed features. The piece is presented on a textured bronze base. The sculpture is compact in size, focusing on the interaction between the figures.

The Sirens

Auguste Rodin · model before 1887, cast probably 1900/1920 · bronze ·  Accession ID  1978.71.1

A small, shaggy, black and white dog stands in a wood paneled room with its body angled to our right but turning its head, pink tongue out, to our left in this vertical painting. The animal is painted with loose brushstrokes that evoke the dog’s long, feathery fur. The dog peers to our left with golden brown eyes. It is black along its flanks and ears, with a stripe of white down the center of the head, and on the muzzle. The chest, belly, and legs are also white, and the bushy tail, which curls up and out like a fountain, is a mixture of black and white. Leaning on the paneling behind the dog to our right is a light wood walking stick. An object, presumably a stuffed toy in the shape of a person wearing a long black robe lined in crimson, lies on the brownish sage-green floor in front of the dog. The dog’s name, “TAMA,” appears in tan block letters at the upper left. The artist signed the work in the lower right corner, "Manet."

Tama, the Japanese Dog

Edouard Manet · c. 1875 · oil on canvas ·  Accession ID  1995.47.12

This is a painting of a social gathering in an outdoor setting. Two figures are central to the composition, facing each other, one dressed in a dark outfit and the other in a long dress with red accents. The background features additional figures. A couple of dogs are also present. The use of light strokes and subtle colors gives the piece a delicate quality. This painting resembles the style of John Singer Sargent, with its graceful depiction of everyday life.
