This painting shows a scene with several people spaced out across a grassy expanse. The horizon is high in the painting, lined with white structures with red roofs and green trees. Closest to us are the silhouettes of several people engaged in leisurely activities. One person appears to sit on a grass hill, while others walk in opposite directions down a path, two holding umbrellas. The people are painted with thick, dark paint strokes, and have no detail inside their forms. Behind them, towards the horizon, is a wide pink stretch that could be a river or a path. The brushstrokes in the painting are loose and expressive, contributing to a sense of movement in the depiction of both the people and the landscape. The overall color palette consists of warm earth tones, muted greens, soft pinks, and gentle blues. Different colors are layered on top of one another in short brushstrokes, giving the painting a blurred effect.

Figures in a Landscape

Georges Seurat · c. 1883 · oil on wood ·  Accession ID  2014.18.53

This painting shows a person in an agricultural setting. The background is made of horizontal bands of browns and greens, painted in short, overlapping strokes. In the center, the person is bent over, facing the right and raising a thin tool above their head. The person is dressed in a blue shirt and brown pants and appears to have pale skin. There is an area of pinkish gray on their head, perhaps suggesting hair or a hat. The person is painted in the same short, overlapping strokes, giving them a blurred appearance with little detail.

Peasant with a Hoe

Georges Seurat · c. 1882 · oil on wood ·  Accession ID  2014.18.49

In this painting, short, angular brushstrokes suggest a person in motion. The person is bent over, facing the left, raising a large, thin object over one shoulder. They have pinkish skin and wear a white shirt and blue pants with a black hat. Their facial features are undefined. The person is surrounded by yellow brushstrokes that resemble piles of hay or dry grass, while the background behind the yellow piles is made of dark green tones. The painting is made of thick, overlapping brushstrokes in different shades, giving it a hazy appearance.
