American, born Uruguay, 1930
Sculptor Alfredo Halegua creates large-scale abstract sculptures from materials such as steel and other metals. The artist focuses on geometric abstraction, especially the two-dimensionality of lines and forms. He has experimented for decades with clean lines, sharp angles, and negative space.
Halegua was born in Uruguay and is based in Washington, DC. His public artworks are on view across many US cities. Halegua’s 25-foot sculpture America, made in 1970, is on view in the National Gallery’s Sculpture Garden.
