The image displays an adult and a child next to an upright rectangular structure. The adult, a woman, is partially turned towards the child while the child faces the structure. The woman has light-colored hair covered by a blue shawl and is wearing a long light-colored dress. The child has short blond hair and is dressed in a white shirt with dark shorts. The background features green vegetation and hints of trees. The painting is created with a soft pastel art style, with gentle strokes conveying a dappled sunlight effect.

Watching the Bees

Julian Alden Weir · 1896 · pastel and charcoal on wove paper ·  Accession ID  2014.136.185

This painting shows a cluster of trees against a bright sky in shades of pale yellow and pale seafoam green. Closest to us, a green-gray path stretches horizontally next to tall teal and blue grasses. The gray shadow of a tall tree crosses over the path. The trees occupy the top two-thirds of the painting, and they are painted in shades of blue-green, gray, pale yellow, lilac, and a pale, reddish-pink hue. Near the top right corner, a pale-yellow light source is visible through the leaves and branches of the tree in the center. The brushstrokes in the painting are visible, and the short strokes of thick paint all go in the same direction. These brushstrokes, combined with the seafoam-green color palette, give the painting a soft, hazy look.

The sculpture depicts a crouching panther. The panther's body is elongated, with its back arched and muscles defined. The sculpture is made from bronze with a dark brown patina and hints of verdigris green. The panther is mounted on an oval base resembling natural ground. The figure is detailed and realistic, with its tail curved upwards and a focused expression in its gaze.
