A woman wrapped in silver and gold robes lifts fabric to reveal her head and face in this freestanding cast bronze sculpture. The woman’s skin and a garment held in place with a belt are polished gold. The fabric that drapes over her head and wraps around her garment is silver, and her hair is dark brown. In this photograph, her body faces us, and she tips her head to look down and slightly to our left. She has a long nose, high cheekbones, a pointed chin, and her lips are closed. The belt has an oval green stone at the front, and it wraps tightly around her ribcage just under her bare breasts. The gold garment puddles around her bare feet, and a bit spills off the front edge of the brown, bronze square platform, which sits on a slightly wider marble base swirled with white and russet brown.

Nature Unveiling Herself before Science

Louis-Ernest Barrias · model 1895/1899, cast c. 1900 · bronze with silvering and malachite ·  Accession ID  2004.166.1

Steep, rocky cliffs span the right two-thirds of this horizontal painting in front of a distant landscape to the left. A brown stone fortress or castle, with crenellated walls and few visible windows, is built at the edge of the cliff at the center of the image. To the right and higher up on the hill are more reddish-brown stone ruins with tall, narrow towers, also partially overgrown with vegetation. Closer to us and in the bottom right corner of the painting, a person with light skin wearing a brimmed hat and tan and brown clothing stands among several goats and looks out to the left. Some goats graze or stand on the rocky path near the person, while others are scattered farther across the sloping, grassy terrain. The rocky hillside is dotted with patches of green vegetation and shrubs. The base of the cliffs fade in the near distance and beyond them is a wide, hazy valley or plain under a blue sky filled with soft, white clouds. Streaks over mountains along the horizon, which comes halfway up the composition, suggest distant rain. A black mark in the lower right corner could be the artist’s initials, JS, conjoined as a monogram.

The sculpture depicts a female figure in a dynamic pose, balancing on one leg with the other leg extended backward. Her arms are positioned, with her right arm bent and her left arm extended outward. The sculpture is crafted from bronze, giving it a warm color that highlights the contours and musculature of the figure. The bronze surface reflects light. The figure stands on a small circular platform mounted on a wider pedestal base. Anatomical detail makes the sculpture appear lifelike, yet it maintains an idealized form characteristic of classical sculpture.

The sculpture is a bust depicting the head and face of a man. The figure has an elongated face with prominent cheekbones, a straight nose, and a notable mustache. The hair is short and combed back. The sculpture appears to be cast in a dark-colored metal, possibly bronze, giving it a shiny, reflective quality. The head is mounted on a simple, square base with a small vertical rod supporting the face, creating an impression of the head slightly elevated above the base. The expression on the face is neutral.

The image depicts two figures positioned slightly side by side from about the knees up. The figure on the left is wearing a head covering and robes, with facial features that are not distinctly detailed. The figure on the right has more defined features, wearing a headscarf and loosely draped clothing. Both figures are holding objects in their hands. The background of the image is plain, presented in a sketch-like style with no distinct features, focusing attention on the two figures. The entire composition is rendered in a monochromatic color scheme, likely using etching techniques.

The image shows multiple figures engaging in different activities. In the foreground on the left, a man is shown walking briskly in a military uniform with a rifle slung over his shoulder. Adjacent to him, in the mid-ground, a smaller figure of a child or young person is carrying a basket. Another vignette includes a man in a stately stance on the right, wearing a top hat and holding a cane, and a woman in a full-length dress interacting with a large fabric drum. In the background on the right, a person is riding a galloping horse. At the bottom of the image, further in the background, a horse-drawn cart is visible. The background consists of varied landscapes, including buildings, trees, and open fields, all in a sketch-like style.

The image shows two figures in a classical, stylized manner. The seated figure is dressed in a toga-like garment, with an exposed chest and muscular form. This figure appears aged, with a wrinkled face, bushy beard, and bald head, looking intently at the standing figure. The standing figure has wavy hair styled away from the face and is holding a large jug, pouring liquid into a goblet held by the seated figure. The background includes simple architectural elements with a suggestion of drapery and horizontal lines. The image is rendered in a monochromatic scheme with bold outlines and shaded areas.

This is a drawing of a caricature featuring a small child being restrained by several men. The image depicts a group of men in 19th-century attire holding ropes attached to a young girl, who is pulling away from them with an expression of determination. Each man exhibits different body language and facial expressions. The child symbolizes struggle and the era's social or political dynamics. The title suggests themes of liberation.
