The image features a landscape view from an elevated angle. The scene includes winding paths surrounded by trees depicted with dynamic pencil strokes. There are upward curving pathways leading to textured foliage, followed by outlines of rounded formations suggesting hills or small mountains. The horizon line appears high on the paper with hints of buildings in the distance. The pencil sketch uses varying marks for movement and texture. New York from Dyckman Street Ferry Hill No. 1

John Marin · 1921 · graphite on wove paper ·  Accession ID  2024.133.1

Twelve people sit and stand along a sidewalk in this abstracted, horizontal scene, which is drawn with black felt-tip pen on white paper. The people’s facial features, including almond-shaped eyes, wide noses and mouths, and their blocky bodies are drawn simply with single lines and no shading. Clusters of intersecting vertical and horizontal lines suggest brick buildings in the background and a stoop facing the street. Five heads peer through windows from the buildings. In the center, a bald man sits on the stoop, leaning forward with his hands crossed over his knees, while a cat sits nearby. To our left, a couple stands by a streetlamp, and the head and torso of a woman appears to emerge from an opening in the street. They all face the man at the center. To our right, another man wearing a cap and holding a cigarette leans against a fire hydrant. Beyond the man in the center stands a man with a moustache and curly hair who points to our right. A woman facing left in profile stands next to him. The artist signed the lower right corner, “Rom are bear den.”

The image shows two panels filled with swirling shapes and lines. The predominant colors are brown, orange, and olive green. The arrangement of these colors and shapes in each panel forms the silhouette of a face in profile view. Each panel mirrors the other, with the left side showing a more intricate mix of shades. The abstract use of color and form gives the impression of reflections or shadows across a human visage.

The image shows dense, overlapping horizontal lines and subtle crosshatch patterns. The lines create an abstract composition, resembling a woven fabric or mesh grid. Some areas have darker, concentrated clusters that could be seen as distant hills or mountains. The abstract nature of the piece suggests a familiar landscape, akin to looking through a foggy window at a merged yet indistinct terrain or horizon.

The image depicts interconnected geometric shapes and jagged lines arranged in a chaotic manner. Overlapping lines and shapes create a composition that could be reminiscent of trees, foliage, rock textures, or mountainous landscapes. The dynamic interplay of these elements creates a fragmented canvas with densely detailed areas and sparser regions, suggesting an abstract landscape seen through a fractured lens.
