The image shows two men. The man on the left is standing almost fully sideways, facing slightly towards the right side of the image while walking. He has short, curly hair and a mustache. He wears a light-colored button-up shirt with visible patches and a pen in his chest pocket, paired with matching pants. His right hand holds a small object. The man on the right stands facing the camera with a slightly hunched posture. He has slicked-back hair and a clean-shaven face. He is dressed in a dark cardigan over a light shirt and tie, and dark trousers. His hands are clasped together holding a folded piece of paper or a small object. In the background are several mid-century style buildings and parked classic cars, with a low concrete wall in the foreground. Palm trees and lush greenery are interspersed in the area.

The facial features are abstract and heavily outlined, with pronounced dark lines emphasizing the nose, brow, and lips, along with deep-set eyes and prominent cheekbones. The hair appears dark with a notable widow's peak, accented with broad, expressive brush strokes. The clothing is illustrated with bold colors, primarily consisting of a mix of lighter shades with dark outlines, creating a discernible contrast, and features broad bands that resemble a cross on the shoulder. The background consists of muted blues and greens applied with an expressive, painterly style, providing a textured and patterned setting that complements the prominent figure in the foreground.

We look down at a wooden tabletop with two playing cards among stacked rectangles and wedges in this vertical, abstract painting. The two playing cards we can make out are a four of diamonds to our left and an ace of clubs to our right. The ace shifts from the traditional black club on a white background to a moss-green club on a black background on the top half. The other rectangles could be upside-down cards, though they are larger in scale than the face-up playing cards. These shapes are made with pea-green dots on a black background, areas of textured silvery olive green, and sky blue. The cards lie on a mostly complete corner of a table painted with wood grain, but triangles of wood grain, green polka dots, and blue intersect and bisect each other. A wide fern-green form with rounded lobes hanging from it fills the upper left corner, perhaps representing a tree. The area to its right is filled with baby blue edged with white. The artist signed the lower right, “Juan Gris.”
