Cows, horses, sheep, and pigs stand closely together in a band across the bottom edge of this horizontal painting. Rolling hills open onto grassy lawns, farms, and fields beyond. The two dozen cows spanning the leftmost two-thirds of the painting are cream white, tawny, russet, or dark brown, or speckled with brown or black and white. White sheep, six adult and one baby, cluster beyond the cows, to our left. Five black pigs are behind the cows across the middle of the picture, one of them suckling several piglets. Nine horses and foals gathered to our right are white, gray, or one of several shades of brown. The land on which the animals stand is teal blue underfoot. Pale green, grassy plots rise gently to either side of a trough or irrigation ditch that comes toward us from a culvert at the far side of the field. Eight men wearing tall hats, coats, and pants gather in pairs beyond the animals, and one man, farther in the distance, walks alone. The grassy lawn is hemmed to each side by fences, and more run across the back of the space. A man walks behind a horse-drawn plow to our right. There is a line of five spindly trees in front of the fence to our left. Three cows lie in that enclosure not far from one more tree. Several buildings painted with cream white and barn red line the plots across the back of the space. Beyond, painted lightly, as if hazy, lines of crops or trees blur into the horizon, which comes about two-thirds of the way up the composition. The sky above is pale petal pink, and it deepens to icy blue across the top edge. A couple bunches of white and tan-colored clouds drift to our right. Brown lettering against a sand-colored ground along the bottom edge reads, “An Indian summer view of the Farm & Stock of James C. Cornell of Northampton Bucks county Pennsylvania. Tat took the Premium in the Agricultural society, october the 12, 1848 Painted by E. Hicks in the 69th year of his age.” The name James C. Cornell is in all caps, and October begins with a lowercase o.

This painting shows a young woman seated on a wooden chair, seen from the knees up. Her body is slightly turned to the left, but her head is turned towards us. She has short, curly, blonde hair and a round face with a fair complexion. She has a straight nose, thin eyebrows, and thin pink lips in a neutral expression. She is wearing a white gown with a wide neckline, short sleeves, and blue bows on the shoulders, as well as a brown necklace with a circular golden pendant. In her left hand, she holds a small brown book with green edges, and her other hand rests on a brown table next to her, holding a pink rose. On the same table is a paper with several lines of indistinguishable text on it. The background is dark gray.

The painting depicts a rural farmstead. On the left, two horses stand near a gray wooden barn, with cows standing and sitting on the right in front of a fenced-in green field. The ground below the animals is brown, with patches of yellow, green, and cream. There is a white two-story house with blue shutters and a white picket fence in the distance. The sky is grayish-blue with light clouds. Trees around the house and barn show hints of green and brown.

A young girl stands facing us next to a tall, stylized plant, perhaps a rose bush, in this vertical portrait painting. Looking at us with blue eyes, she has light, peachy skin, and her brown hair is parted down the middle and pulled back. Her shoulders are bare, and she wears a coral-red bead necklace. The dress flares out where it encircles her upper arms above short ruffled sleeves. A black apron is tied around her waist and falls to about her knees. The skirt of the dress is longer, falling to midcalf, and wide, white petticoats extend like pant legs below to white stockinged feet in black shoes. A white, lace-trimmed handkerchief is tucked into her apron, and she wears a black brooch at her chest. She holds a gray glass basket in her left hand, our right, filled with two red roses, a blue flower, and green leaves. With one hand, she touches a stem on the rose bush, which is planted in a red pot. One flower has fallen to the floor next to a brown and white cat, perhaps a kitten, in the lower left corner of the painting. The girl and cat stand on an emerald-green carpet, the edge of which runs from the lower right corner of the canvas toward the back of the darkened room.

Three pale-skinned, blue-eyed children wearing green suits stand in a row facing us in this horizontal portrait painting. They all have round faces and full, pink cheeks. The tallest child is to the right, and he has shoulder-length cinnamon-brown hair. The other two come up to his shoulder and have blond hair. The tallest puts one arm on the far shoulder of the middle child, and the two smaller children hold hands. Each wears a pine-green, one-piece outfit with pewter-gray buttons, a wide, ivory-white collar lined with ruffles, and black, shin-high boots. The boy on our left holds a branch of dark red cherries. The middle child holds a pink rose, and the tallest a basket filled with pink roses. A black dog holding a gray and mauve-pink bird in its mouth stands in profile facing our left in the lower right corner of the canvas. The room around them has a tan-colored floor and gray walls. The room opens onto an alcove to our right with a rectangular window. A slender tree is along the left edge of the opening and a few pale, pink-tinged gray mountains line the bottom edge. Clear blue sky fills the rest of the window.

A young, pale-skinned girl sits on a wooden chair in this vertical portrait painting. Her body is angled to our right so her feet are cut off by the bottom right corner of the canvas. She has round cheeks, green eyes, a dainty mouth, and a cleft chin. A ruffled white bonnet tied around the crown with a carnation-pink bow covers her hair. Her white dress has short, flutter sleeves, a straight neckline across the chest, and a high waist. The gossamer-white skirt falls to her feet and has decorative bands near the hem. A cherry-red sash is tied around her waist and falls over the back of the chair. The girl holds a bunch of red strawberries in one hand and holds one up by her chest with the other. The background is dark bronze brown.

The image shows an upper-body portrait of a seated man. He is positioned in an angled chair, facing slightly to his right. His facial features include a composed expression, a narrow nose, and focused eyes, with a prominent forehead framed by his powdered, shoulder-length hair. The man is dressed in a brown coat with large buttons over a pale waistcoat and a white, ruffled shirt. He holds a book in his left hand, resting it on the arm of the chair. The chair is upholstered in red fabric with a gold-studded trim. In the background, there is a bookcase filled with books, partially visible. The dark drapery provides contrast and depth to the setting.

This painting shows a man seated, with his full body visible. His body is slightly turned to the right, but he looks out at us, one hand resting on his knee and the other holding a sword upright. The man has a serious expression, light skin, a square jawline, and high cheekbones. His hair is dark and styled neatly. He is wearing formal attire consisting of a blue coat with gold buttons, a yellow waistcoat with white frilled cuffs, and beige breeches with button details. His stockings are white, and his shoes are black with rectangular buckles. Nearby, on a table, rests a black tricorn hat with gold trim. The background features a window or painting depicting lines of soldiers, horses, and trees under a dark blue sky.
