Procris' Prayer to Diana

Bernardino Luini · c. 1520/1522 · fresco ·  Accession ID  1943.4.52

This is a fresco showing a pastoral scene with human activity. The viewpoint is slightly elevated, overlooking a hilly landscape with structures, trees, and five people, some of whom are dressed in gold robes. The people are engaged in various activities such as walking across the hills or kneeling beside a tree, tending to something on the ground. The person closest to us is to the left of center, kneeling down and lifting a small hammer in the air. This person has pale skin and golden hair, and they wear a golden robe over a white shirt and white pants. The color palette is muted and earthy, with soft greens, browns, and yellows dominating the scene.

Cephalus Hiding the Jewels

Bernardino Luini · c. 1520/1522 · fresco ·  Accession ID  1943.4.53

This is a painting of a pastoral scene with a person standing beside a group of sleeping people and animals. The setting includes rolling green hills and towering trees on the right, with a distant gray castle on a mountain to the left. Near the bottom left, there is a person standing and holding a long, thin staff. This person has pale skin and curly blond hair, and they wear a purple dress or robe and laced sandals. They are looking towards us, and their right hand is gesturing towards a group of two people and three animals on the right who are all curled on the grassy ground, appearing to sleep. These people wear clothes in shades of yellow, red, and white, and they also seem to have pale skin and blond hair. The animals look like small dogs. The sky above is pale gray-blue color with soft clouds.

Bernardino Luini · c. 1520/1522 · fresco ·  Accession ID  1943.4.57

This tall, vertical fresco depicts a person in a red garment extending their arm towards a white unicorn that is bowing down on grass. The person is on the left side of the image, and only partially visible. The unicorn's long horn almost touches the person’s outstretched hand. The unicorn's back legs are extended, but its front legs are kneeling. The person and unicorn are on a light green field with red flowers and small green ferns. Behind them are thin trees in front of distant, rocky mountains. The sky above is beige, blending into the earthy tones of the landscape.

Procris and the Unicorn

Bernardino Luini · c. 1520/1522 · fresco ·  Accession ID  1943.4.60

This is a painting of a hunting scene involving several animals in a wooded landscape. The foreground shows a group of hounds engaging with a downed animal on a grassy area surrounded by vegetation. Above them, a figure in purple garb raises an arm. The figures are positioned on an incline that spirals upwards into a dense backdrop of tall trees. Light filters through the branches creating a serene backdrop of cloudy skies. The composition uses natural color tones to depict depth and distance in a rural environment. This is in the style of Piero di Cosimo.

Bernardino Luini · c. 1520/1522 · fresco ·  Accession ID  1943.4.55

This is a fresco of an elegant building with a garden and waterway in front of it. The building is pale orange with white columns, a triangular pediment, and large windows. There is a red doorway at the top of a few stairs that shows a brown interior. A few people sit or stand on the steps by the doorway, looking in the building. On the left, two people walk towards the doorway. One of them has a bare chest and the legs of a goat, while the other is a person in a pink tunic with blond hair and white boots. Both people have pale skin. Closer to us, there is a green garden filled with green plants and red flowers, with a stream or water feature flowing in front of it, bordered by reeds and green grass.
