Joseph Cornell · 1943-1948 · box construction ·  Accession ID  2023.124.16

This image shows a roughly rectangular shape within a worn wooden frame. Inside the frame is a white textured canvas with an abstract composition of layered paper fragments and text. Some fragments resemble torn posters or advertisements with text like "Grand Hotel BON PORT" and "Ostend Hotel." An irregularly-shaped patch reveals a colorful printed design with an illustration resembling a cat's face, akin to a vintage travel poster or hotel advertisement. The scene suggests the back of a stretched canvas, offering a glimpse into the layered and overlapping nature of objects and memories.

Joseph Cornell · 1954 · box construction ·  Accession ID  2023.124.17

This is a painting featuring a white swan in the foreground set against a backdrop of a castle. The swan has a graceful posture with its neck curved elegantly as it appears to be grooming itself. The background shows an old castle with multiple turrets and windows, surrounded by trees with intricate leaf patterns. The scene is enclosed in a wooden frame, adding depth to the piece. The artwork is monochromatic with shades of blue and white, giving it a calm and timeless atmosphere. The style resembles that of 19th-century European aesthetics combining elements of nature and architecture.

The abstract work suggests a layered perception of structural design and human identity.

The sculpture features a mixed media box designed in the style of a hinged cabinet or book, with one side open displaying text from the book "Paul and Virginia" and black-and-white illustrations. The main body is composed of rectilinear compartments resembling small drawers or boxes, mostly in metallic silver, with a central circular cut-out revealing a pale blue background with straw and white eggs. Above this, a darker blue panel with abstract and linear elements provides a contrasting focal point. The sculpture has a weathered appearance in brown tones with a wood-like texture.

The artwork features rectangular and cubical shapes within a frame that includes a central image of a seated child in historical attire. The arrangement presents an abstract composition with geometric cubes, a green polyhedron, and sections of classical-style portraits. The cubes are marked with numerical notations like '2' and '2²', while the green form has labels like 'A' and 'G'. Cut-out rectangles with images of well-dressed children add traditional portraiture elements to the modern geometric abstraction.

Suspended from the top are several spherical objects of different sizes resembling planets made from cork. Two glass shelves or tubes hold two small blue glass spheres. On the left, there are three wine glasses that seem to hold wooden cubes and a round white object. On the right is a white pipe shaped like a human hand holding a glass. The bottom of the case has a dark purple velvet lining.
