Leonard Baskin · c. 1962 · etching in black on wove paper ·  Accession ID  2013.121.56

This is a drawing of an isolated figure by a horizontal line. To the left side of the image, there is a sketch of a figure with minimal details sitting or standing at the edge of a dark horizontal surface. The line and shading suggest a body of water or a ledge, creating a contrast with the blank space above and to the right. The rest of the composition is minimalist, with negative space emphasizing the solitude of the figure and the linear structure that occupies a third of the drawing from the bottom. The simple and restricted use of lines conveys solitude and contemplation.
