Shown from the knees up, a woman with pale, almost white-colored skin looks out at us in this hazy, shadowy vertical painting. The setting is painted with smudged browns around a corner of electric-blue sky at the upper right. The woman rests her right elbow, to our left, up on a surface, presumably a rocky ledge, but details are difficult to make out. Her shoulders are angled slightly to our left, but her face is turned to us. She looks out with dark eyes under lowered brows. At first glance she seems to look at us, but a closer look shows that outlining around her irises and eyelids indicates that she looks slightly up and to our right. Her lips are closed, and her chin is tucked back. Copper-red hair is parted down the middle and gleams along the center part before falling quickly into shadow as it reaches down past her hips. She rests her chin against a closed fist of the arm propped on the ledge. The other hand sits next to the elbow on the ledge. One sapphire-blue sleeve falls off her sleeveless, low-cut dress, which falls straight off the bottom edge of the painting. The scene is painted with blended strokes, including the woman’s features, so has a soft, ethereal look. The artist signed the brown area near the lower left with honey-yellow paint, “J J HENNER.”

Between us and a river lined with buildings on the far bank in the distance, tall willow trees nearly span the height of this horizontal landscape. The scene is loosely painted, and the color palette is almost completely dominated by cool tones of spring, sage, celery, and kelly green, and steel and sea blue. The grasses near us are painted with diagonal strokes that alternate direction and color as they move back toward the river. Golden yellow daubs in the lower right suggest blooms, and leaves on the trees are created with thin, upward strokes and dabs along slender branches. The trees reach high into a sky filled with sweeps of beige, blush pink, and spring green layered over pale blue. The river is a lavender gray, and the low, tightly clustered buildings are painted with a mix of ochre, peach, and denim blue. The artist has signed and dated the work in the lower right corner, though the final digit is illegible: “Claude Monet 188.”

We look across a channel of choppy water at three masted ships, a sailboat, at least one steamer, and three rowboats in this horizontal seascape painting. The white peaks and waves are painted with pearlescent shades of white, gold, ice blue, and the faintest pink tinge. The steamer belches gray smoke along a coastline in the distance to the left. The sailboat is farther back. Two of the three masted ships edge closer to us to the right of the sailboat. The ship is first almost halfway across the canvas from the left edge, and the second, which flies a flag vertically striped with blue, white, and red, is about two-thirds of the way across. The third masted ship is much farther away near the right edge of the composition. Two of the long rowboats are near the bottom left corner of the painting and the third is far out by the third ship. The horizon comes about a quarter of the way up the painting. Puffy gray clouds pile up on the horizon and are edged in white where they face open blue sky along the top edge. Cloud cover is streaked around the most distant ship, suggesting that a storm has begun. The scene is loosely painted with visible brushstrokes throughout. The artist signed and dated the painting in the lower left corner, “E. Boudin. 83” and labeled the location to the right, “Le Havre.”
