This painting is a portrait of a person depicted from the waist up, turned slightly to the right with one hand raised to their chest. The person has pale skin, rosy cheeks, a thin mustache, and long, curly brown hair. They are wearing a loose, long-sleeved blue garment on top of a billowing white shirt. The background features a dark interior space with an arched window on the right, through which a landscape with trees and a distant spire is visible under a blue sky.

The painting features a valley with purple and brown mountains in the distance, surrounding a reflective body of water with a small rowboat floating on it. Closer to us, there are gray rocks, brown tree trunks and branches, and lush green vegetation at the edge of the water. The sky above is painted in warm shades of yellow, peach, and orange, which transition to pale greenish-blue at the top. The water below reflects these colors, as well as those of the distant mountain and surrounding trees.

This painting shows a young woman lying on her stomach on a brown, rocky surface near the water's edge, looking towards the sea. The woman's bare feet are towards the bottom left corner of the painting, while her head is in the center, resting on her hand. She faces the right, and we see her back and side. She wears a pale green shirt with blue sleeves, a brown skirt, and a white cloth on her head. There is a red cloth on the ground next to her, as well as a pointed wooden stick that appears to be covered in white strips of cloth or feathers. The ground below her on the right is a tan, sandy color, and behind her is the sea, which is painted in vibrant turquoise and green shades, with white lines capping small waves. The sky is light blue with puffy white clouds, and distant landforms are visible in light gray across the water.

In this painting, a woven basket on a stone ledge contains peaches, black grapes, green grapes, and wide green leaves. Peaches are placed prominently at the top of the pile, with grape clusters overflowing on either side. The green leaves and red-tinted grapevine leaves are scattered around. The gray stone surface is visible under the basket, and the background is black.

This painting shows a woman in profile, sitting at a wooden table strewn with papers, her body angled away from us. She has pale skin and rosy cheeks, and her light brown hair is tied up and adorned with a light blue headband. She wears a light-colored gown that appears mostly white, but also has streaks of light pink, yellow, pale green, and light blue. She is writing on one of the sheets of paper that is scattered on the table. Six potted plants with long green stems and white flowers line the edge of the table across from her. She sits in a room with a brownish-gray wooden floor and pale green walls. There is a bookshelf to the left of the woman, with a framed photograph, a small bowl, and three long white candlesticks of varying heights on top of it. Above the bookshelf is a tall window ledge which is also lined with leafy plants in pink, yellow, light blue, and white pots. White light shines in from between the plants, casting a bright glow on the back of the woman and faint shadows below the table and the chair she sits on. The brushstrokes of the painting, especially those in the background, are visible, giving the painting a slightly hazy quality.

A sprig of flowering rosemary lying against an ivory-white background and the twelve insects that surround it fills this horizontal painting. Stretching nearly the length of the composition with the cut end to our left, the rosemary has blunted, needle-like, gently curling teal-green leaves and small periwinkle-blue flowers along the ash-brown stem. Several insects perch on the sprig while others are seen as if looking from overhead, resting on the white background. The three largest insects perch along the top of the sprig, with an ivory-white butterfly with moss-green and black markings to the left, a black and golden, fuzzy bumblebee near the center, and a lemon-yellow butterfly with red antennae to our right. A tiny red insect, perhaps a ladybug without spots, sits on a leaf between the bee and yellow butterfly, and a small wasp-like insect rests on a leaf in at the lower left. Another mosquito-like insect alights on the surface nearby, next to a beetle with a honey-orange body with black, almost tiger-like stripes. A large cockroach sitting near the lower right corner has six spindly legs, a mahogany-colored abdomen, a black thorax, and tiny, black head. Spaced somewhat evenly across the top of the panel are a brick-red, winged insect to the left, a mint-green, beetle-like bug near a moth patterned with bone white and black, and a black, fly-like insect to our right. Lit from the upper left, the rosemary and insects cast shadows on the surface. The artist signed and dated the work with gray in the lower left corner: “J v. kessel . . f. Ao 1653.”

A pale-skinned man wearing voluminous robes under a monk’s hood is carved from wood and painted in this freestanding sculpture. In this photograph, the man’s body faces us as he tips his head to our left and back to look up in that direction. His lips are parted, and his square chin is shaded with a five o’clock shadow. His gray hair is curly over each ear, and the top of his head is bald. He holds his right hand, to our left, up with his thumb and first two fingers almost touching. He holds an open book in the flat of his other hand. A rocky formation on the pages, the edges of which curl up, could be a flame. The man’s hood is pushed back, and the ivory-white, knee-length cloak drapes heavily over his shoulders and parts over his spread arms. He wears a long robe painted earthy brown that reaches his sandaled feet. Both the cloak and robe are edged with gold along the hems and painted with gold, leafy designs. The sleeves of his robe hang wide around his wrists. He stands with his weight on his right foot and the other foot thrust a bit forward on a square, wood base. The sculpture is photographed against a white background.
