The Blue Shawl

American 19th Century · c. 1820 · oil on wood ·  Accession ID  1953.5.74

The image shows a pencil drawing featuring four individuals in dynamic poses. The figures are depicted from head to toe, each in energetic positions, appearing to propel themselves forward. Starting from the left, the first person leans in a bent stance, stretching one arm forward; he has short hair and is dressed in a suit with shoes. The second person extends both arms outward, their forward thrust highlighted by forward-leaning posture, wearing similarly styled clothing and also having short hair. The third person is more obscured, appearing between the other two figures, with their head turned slightly in profile, showing long hair. The fourth figure is crouched with one arm extended downwards and the other upwards. All individuals are dressed in suits with long trousers and are positioned on what appears to be a triangular surface. The background of the drawing is devoid of detail, focusing attention on the movement and posture of the figures, drawn on a blue-tinted textured paper with grid lines faintly visible across the entire image.

This painting shows a grassy, hilly landscape with trees around the edge and a wide river in the distance, dotted with small sailing ships. In the center of the painting is a stately white mansion on top of a green hill. To the right of the mansion, two couples walk along the grass by a white fence. Closer to us, in the bottom left corner, another couple walks arm in arm. The woman wears a long pink jacket over a white dress with a pink hat, and the man wears a dark blue coat over a yellow vest, with blue shorts over white stockings and a black hat on his head. Behind them, the wide river below stretches to the horizon. The sky above the scene is light blue and light pink, with purple clouds. The water of the river reflects these colors, and is mostly a soft, light pink.

The painting depicts a man from the thighs up, standing and facing slightly to the left with his face turned towards us. His right hand appears to be pointing downwards towards the bottom-left corner. He has a broad face with fair skin, rosy cheeks, a long nose, and small eyes. His shoulder-length brown hair has a slight wave. The man wears a long rust-colored coat with silver buttons and a white cravat, along with a white shirt and cuffs at his wrists. His left hand wears a white glove, and he is holding the other glove in that hand. He also holds a black hat under his left arm and has a sword tied to his waist. The background is dark, with a cloudy sky visible on the left and a ship sailing on dark, calm waters.
