Join us for an introduction by Sky Hopinka, in person.

malni – towards the ocean, towards the shore , Sky Hopinka’s first feature film, follows the characters Sweetwater Sahme and Jordan Mercier's wanderings as they contemplate the afterlife, rebirth, and the place in between. Spoken mostly in Chinuk Wawa, an indigenous language of the Pacific Northwest, their stories are departures from the Chinookan origin of death myth, with its distant beginning and circular shape. Through gorgeous natural landscapes filmed throughout the Pacific Northwest, as well as intimate conversations recorded there, Hopinka allows vistas and thoughts to coalesce at a steady and discrete pace. (Sky Hopinka, 2020, English and Chinuk Wawa with English subtitles, DCP, 80 minutes)

Programmed in conjunction with the exhibition Sky Hopinka: Kicking the Clouds, opening the same day. Hopinka will also give a talk at 12:00 p.m. with artist Tom Jones.
