The relationship between Matisse and Picasso has been referred to as a rivalry, friendship, combat, dialogue, and mutual admiration. Speaking about each other, Matisse remarked: “Only one person has the right to criticize me, it’s Picasso.” And for Picasso: “All things considered, there is only Matisse.” Senior lecturer David Gariff explores their complex relationship.
