Poetry Writing Workshop: María Fernanda on Language

Trace the many histories of a word, a name, a home, and so much more. Join award-winning poet María Fernanda for a poetry workshop in the Homelands gallery.

Try generative writing exercises inspired by works in the gallery, excerpts from poems, archives, and other sources. Explore generations of language, and write your own original poetry.

This program welcomes all people of all experience levels, from novice to seasoned poets. Paper, pencil, and seating will be provided. You are encouraged to bring notebooks. 

María Fernanda (she/hers) explores the intimacy of sisterhood, the anchor of intergenerational coexistence, and grief in her work. Poetry is her way of sharing her rich literary upbringing in Washington, DC. She enjoys sharing beloved traditions of care with her community and hearing her participants ignite new ones. Fernanda has received the Norma Elia Cantú Award in Creative Writing and the Andrea Klein Willison Prize for Poetry. She has performed her original work in Hamburg, Germany; Moscow, Russia; Nikiti, Greece; and cities across the United States. Learn more at mariafernandapoet.com.
