Being and About: Artists on Film

Join us for a post-screening discussion with filmmaker Marie Valentine Regan, in person.

This program features two new film portraits about two iconic artists. First, Being Blue by British artist Luke Fowler who in 2023 embarked on a residency at Prospect Cottage, the former home of artist, filmmaker, and activist Derek Jarman (1942–1994). Jarman moved to Dungeness in 1986 after being diagnosed with HIV and it soon became a creative hub where he worked across film, art, and horticulture. Fowler considers the landscape and weather of Dungeness as well as Jarman’s life by looking at the house he and his partner Keith Collins (1966–2018) left behind. (Luke Fowler, 2025, 16mm to digital, 17 minutes)

Followed by a preview of Adnan being and time, a new expressionistic film portrait of Etel Adnan (b. Beirut, 1925–2021). Recorded with the artist and poet over the last five years of her life, the film follows Adnan in her daily life, in the studio, in her texts and images, and in the natural world that was essential to her aesthetic and philosophic understanding. As Adnan works without ego, she asks what it means to be alive, to live through catastrophe, and to experience time. Alive with attention, the film creates an encounter with Adnan in her fullness of being. (Marie Valentine Regan, 2025, 16mm to digital, 70 minutes)
