The image is an etching showing the upper half of a seated person. The person is reclined slightly with their right arm resting on a surface and their left arm crossed over their body. They have a full face with a contemplative expression, short dark hair, facial hair around the cheeks and chin, a broad-brimmed hat, and a voluminous coat or cape on their shoulders. There are no visible pieces of jewelry or objects. The background features abstract textures resembling a corner of a room with horizontal and vertical lines. In the bottom left corner, the artist's signature "Whistler" and the date "1859" are visible.
