Artist, American, 1834 - 1903

The image shows a top-down view of a bridge over a river. The bridge occupies the upper third of the composition, creating a horizontal line above the center. It is detailed with soft, sketchy lines indicating shadows and depth. The pencil strokes give the image an impressionistic quality. There are minimal details of vehicles and figures on and near the bridge. Close to us, there are more defined sketches of people and horses moving along a pathway. The color palette is monochromatic, with shades of gray on a cream paper base, accentuating the contrast between dark strokes and the light background. In the distance, the skyline blends into a haze, merging with the atmospheric effects.
