The image shows a person seated on a horse in profile. The person is sitting upright, holding a riding stick in one hand and the horse's reins in the other. The individual has delicate facial features, a calm expression, and shoulder-length hair under a wide-brimmed hat. They wear a detailed doublet, wide ruff collar, and ornate leg coverings, possibly in historical or ceremonial attire. A sash is visible around the waist, and the boots look decorative. The horse is adorned with a detailed saddlecloth. The background displays a rural landscape with buildings, trees, and a small bridge, under a sky with softly lined clouds. The etching is framed with an ornate emblem at the bottom.

[1] This print comes from a large collection of “historical portrait” prints purchased by Rosenwald in 1948. A small subset of this collection—including this print—was sent at an unknown date to the NGA, where it was not immediately accessioned. When NGA registrars came upon this group in 1964, they and Rosenwald erroneously believed that the works had accidentally been omitted from the donor’s 1943 gift to the museum. As a result, the sheets were assigned retroactive accession numbers corresponding with that date. For related correspondence, see NGA curatorial file for objects 1943.3.9230-9317.
