The image is a full-body illustration of a person riding a horse. The rider is positioned side-saddle and faces slightly to the right, looking forward. The rider has delicate facial features, shoulder-length hair, and a wide-brimmed hat with feathers. They are dressed in historical attire with a large ruffled collar, a decorated doublet, tights, and boots. The horse is richly adorned, and the rider holds the reins with one hand and rests the other arm by their side. The person carries a sheathed sword. The background shows a landscape with rolling hills, a settlement or village, and a sky with horizontal lines indicating clouds. The scene is enclosed within an oval border, below which is an ornate scroll design with text and emblems.

[1] This print comes from a large collection of “historical portrait” prints purchased by Rosenwald in 1948. A small subset of this collection—including this print—was sent at an unknown date to the NGA, where it was not immediately accessioned. When NGA registrars came upon this group in 1964, they and Rosenwald erroneously believed that the works had accidentally been omitted from the donor’s 1943 gift to the museum. As a result, the sheets were assigned retroactive accession numbers corresponding with that date. For related correspondence, see NGA curatorial file for objects 1943.3.9230-9317.
