lower center in image: Aug: Caracius. faciebat; by later hand, lower center of album sheet in pen and ink: Le grand St. Jerôme dÁugustin Carrache. Estampe [not deciphered] dúne grande celebrité / Ancienne et belle épreuve. Elle est terminée par Villamena, elève de / Carrache.; by later hand, lower center of mount in graphite: B. 75 ii/ii / Margin with Latin distich cut. One of C's last works, left incomplete at his death / Consdiered by Bartsch his masterpiece. L. Carraci had it finish(sic) by Agostino's pupil F. Bricci

Possibly one of the Princes Gagarin (Paul Paulovich?) (see Lugt 126). Leo Steinberg [1920 - 2011]; purchased 1966 by Dr. Stephen Ostrow; gift to NGA.
