Artist, French, 1836 - 1902

The image shows most of a man's body as he reclines on a curved wooden bench. He is positioned in a relaxed manner, leaning back with one arm stretched across the top of the bench and the other arm bent, holding what appears to be a cigarette. He is wearing a suit and tie along with a hat that partially obscures his facial features. His facial expression is not entirely clear due to the angle of his head and the shadow cast by the hat. There is a book resting next to him on the bench. Surrounding him is a lush, leafy environment with thick foliage and trees, creating a shaded area above the bench. In the background, slightly blurred, is a figure of a woman walking, partially visible through the dense greenery. The entire scene is rendered in a monochromatic tone.
