Artist, American, 1887 - 1953

The image shows an ancient brick gateway or tower, likely part of an old fortress or city wall, captured from a slightly below eye level perspective emphasizing its towering stature. The structure obscures the horizon, dominating the composition. A large archway in the lower section reveals a street with a few figures and a small dog. A clock is visible on the left portion of the tower. The brushstroke style features fine lines and extensive textural work highlighting the brickwork and deteriorating surfaces. The color palette is monochromatic with variations of sepia tones. Figures in shadow are close to us, while bright light illuminates parts of the street further into the image, creating a contrast between light and shadow. The background shows continuous architectural structures in a historical theme.
