The image is a pencil drawing of a man from mid-thigh upwards. He is leaning back on his left hand while holding a stick with a string or strap attached in his right hand. The man's head is turned to his right, and he has a neatly trimmed beard and mustache. He is wearing a military-style cap, a high-collared shirt, and a jacket with epaulets on the shoulders. There are buttons running down the front of the jacket. The background is plain.
