Untitled (Woman with Flowers)

c. 1939

Shown from the knees up, a woman holds a small bouquet of flowers as she looks off to our right in this black and white lithograph. The print’s soft shading gives it the look of a pencil drawing. The woman’s body faces us, but she looks into the distance under pointed eyebrows. She has a long, heart-shaped face with sharp cheekbones. Her nose and closed lips are simply drawn over a pointed chin. Her dress has two buttons beneath the wide, rounded collar. The bodice cinches around a narrow waist, and the puffy short sleeves leave the woman’s arms bare. The full skirt flares out from the hip. The woman holds the flowers down in front of her thighs with straight arms. The background is shaded with gray within a white margin. The print is stamped in the lower margin with “FEDERAL ART PROJECT NYC WPA” to the left and is signed in pencil in the lower right, “Lucille Dunn.”
