This black and white etching uses variations of dark ink and light paper to depict a rural landscape with a dirt path leading toward a cluster of houses and a windmill. On the right, a body of water with grassy banks. There is a small wooden dock in the foreground. Before the wooden dock sits a beached wooden rowboat with a curved hull, small in size. In the body of water sits a sailboat with a single tall mast and triangular sail, and farther back a larger sailing ship with multiple masts and a wider body. On the left, a stone wall surrounded by trees borders the path. In the distance, several buildings with sloped roofs sit amongst the trees, with a tall windmill rising above them and wispy smoke drifting from the chimneys. The shoreline slopes gently down to the water, where tall grass leans to the viewer’s right around a simple dock. The dock is covered by the grass, and you can barely see an old wooden fence peek above the shoreline grass. On the left, above the trees, is a bell tower placed almost directly over the stone wall on the left side of the path. The path winds toward a tall tree. In almost the center is a small wooden paddle boat tied to the shoreline. In the distance, an island is behind the larger sailing ship. Past the island a few small boats barely visible on the horizon. The bay and the background blend into each other because they are the same tone and the faint horizon line. The sky is empty but blends into the bay.
