Gift of the artist to the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (according to inscription on verso, which dealer considers to be in the artist's hand); Koenigliches Kupferstichkabinett (Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin) (L. 1610) 80 / 1922 (crossed out in graphite); (Galerie Ferdinand Möller, Berlin; stamp not in Lugt); [1] acquired for Möller's private collection or sold to an unidentified private collection. [2] (Galerie Kornfeld, Bern, 1984, lot 461); (via Wolfgang Wittrock Kunsthandel, Düsseldorf); Ruth Kainen, Washington, D.C., purchased June 27, 1986; gift to NGA, 2012.

[1] Confiscated in 1937 by the German government as "degenerate art," no. EK 12579 and sold by Möller, one of the agents appointed by the German government's Commission for the Exploitation of Degenerate Art to sell objects purged from German institutions.

[1] In his bill for the print, Wittrock indicates that the print was in Möller's private collection. The lot description in the Kornfeld sale, however, suggests that it was sold from a "Berlin dealer" to another private individual.
