Five Paintbrushes (third state)

1973

Jim Dine

Artist, American, born 1935

Printed with black against cream-white paper, ten paintbrushes with their handles facing up and bristles down are lined up in this horizontal etching. The white handle of each brush is shaded heavily around its edge with dense lines and hatching. Sketch-like, swirling lines and spots like pockmarks speckle the entire surface. The bristles of each brush are long and unruly, like uncut hair.
