Vase with Flowers

1920

Pierre Bonnard

Artist, French, 1867 - 1947

We look down onto pitcher holding mostly white flowers on a tabletop in this loosely painted, vertical still life. The white flowers have yellow centers, and a few darker pink and blue flowers are at the back of the bouquet. The pitcher is striped almost horizontally with harvest yellow, lime green, and pumpkin orange. The tabletop nearly fills the picture, and the cloth is painted as a field of straw yellow edged with a pattern suggested with touches muted green, violet purple, and burgundy red. A sliver of the floor and room beyond the table is visible along the top edge of the canvas. Areas of seafoam blue, marigold orange, and rust red suggest the corner of a door on a carpet. The artist signed and dated the lower right corner, “Bonnard 1920.”
