In the center of the painting, there is a bouquet of various flowers, including blue, white, and yellow blossoms surrounded by green leaves and ferns. The color palette is predominantly dark, and the dark-green foliage is hard to distinguish from the black background in some places. The flowers are arranged closely together, with stems and leaves extending outward. There is a small cluster of red berries hanging on the left side of the bouquet.

Provenance

The artist; probably by inheritance to the artist’s wife’s great grandniece, Jacqueline Ketcham Hoffmire [1908-1985].[1] (Paul Magriel [1906-1990], New York); purchased 2 February 1978 by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon, Upperville, Virginia; bequest 1999 to NGA, with life interest to his wife, Rachel Lambert Mellon [1910-2014].
