Artist, American, 1820 - 1910

This painting shows a serene forest setting with a wide, shallow stream flowing gently towards us. The scene is enclosed by tall trees on either side. The trees have thick brown and green leaves forming a canopy that filters light coming from above into a warm golden glow. The color palette consists of deep greens, browns, and golden yellows, with small patches of light green where the sunlight hits the grass. In the distance, the forest recedes into a soft, brown haze.
