Rounded and angular shapes are painted with areas of mottled white, tan, gray, and brown in this abstracted, oval still-life painting. The shapes would be difficult to interpret without the painting's title, which is "A Glass on a Table." A white shape with a rounded bowl, an angled stem, and flaring foot could be the glass. Other objects are layered behind it, but it is hard to tell if we look down onto a table or into a cabinet, or both. A white rectangle to our left could be a folded newspaper.

Provenance

(Galerie Kahnweiler, Paris).[1] (Galerie Flechtheim, Düsseldorf).[2] Acquired in Germany by 1940 by Lise Bernheimer Rheinstrom [1902-1980], Munich, Havana, and New York;[3] by inheritance to her daughter, Ingrid Rheinstrom Leeds [1925-1997], New York and Bethesda; by inheritance to her husband, Morton Harold Leeds [1921-1998], Bethesda; his estate; gift 14 April 1998 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2014 by the National Gallery of Art.

[1] A Kahnweiler sticker is on the painting's stretcher. The painting was possibly part of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler's collection when it was sequestered by the French government after World War I, but It is unclear whether this painting was included in the Kahnweiler sales held between 1921 and 1923.

[2] There is a Galerie Flechtheim sticker on the back of the painting's frame, probably dating from his time in Düsseldorf from 1913 to 1921.

[3] In a letter dated September 1970 to Kahnweiler, Bernheimer Rheinstrom writes: "ich habe seit uber 30 jahren;" transcript in NGA curatorial files.
