Provenance

Possibly commissioned 1808 by James [1765-1843] and Ann Penn Allen [1769-1851] Greenleaf, Philadelphia and Allentown.[1] Hope C. Patterson [1917-2012, Mrs. John M. Patterson], Washington; her estate; gift 2013 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2016 by the National Gallery of Art.

Ann Penn Allen was James Greenleaf's second wife; they married in 1800 and it was Ann who actually owned Eaglesfield, for two years, from mid-1808 to January 1810. The property was never their permanent residence, as they divided their time between Philadelphia and Allentown, Pennsylvania; Eaglesfield may have been used as a summer house or rented to tenants.
