Possibly commissioned by Madame de Pompadour [née Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, 1721-1764], Paris, as a pendant to Le Dessin. Count Armand de Marcy de Louveciennes. Alfred Chatan, New York;[1] purchased 1901 by William A. Clark [1839-1925], New York; bequest April 1926 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, as La Musique by François Boucher; acquired 2015 by the National Gallery of Art.
