Possibly the sitter, Katherine Stauffer Clark [1844-1893, the first Mrs. William Andrews Clark], Butte, Montana; probably by descent in Clark family to siblings and great-grandchildren of the sitter: John B. Hall Jr., Greenwich, Connecticut, Katherine Hall Vass [d. 1996, later Katherine Hall Berry], Ocala, Florida, and Lewis R.M. Hall, New York; gift October 1978 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washingon; acquired 2015 by the National Gallery of Art.
