Artwork history & notes

Provenance

Margaretta Cameron MacVeagh Farrar Smith [d. 1938], Washington;[1] her husband, Captain Stuart Farrar Smith [d. 1951], Washington; gift 1940 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2015 by the National Gallery of Art.
[1] It is possible that Mrs. Farrar Smith inherited the tapestry from her parents, Wayne MacVeagh (1833-1917) and his second wife, Virginia R. Cameron (1840-1920), of Washington and Philadelphia. This tapestry was one of nine tapestries donated by Captain Farrar Smith to the Corcoran after his wife's death, along with a bronze relief by Augustus Saint-Gaudens (NGA 2014.136.251) that had been commissioned by the MacVeaghs.
