Possibly a gift September 1842 from the artist to the sitter, William J. Stone [1798-1865], Washington;[1] probably by inheritance to his wife, Elizabeth Jane Lenthall Stone [1804-1892], Washington; gift April 1883 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; acquired 2015 by the National Gallery of Art.

[1] An engraver, lithographer, and sculptor, Stone is best known for his 1823 engraved copy of the Declaration of Independence; his wife worked with him in his engraving and lithography business.
