Painter, American, 1887 - 1986

This painting contains several colorful rectangles. At the top is a thin horizontal strip of blue, while on the bottom edge is a slightly thicker cream-colored horizontal strip. Between these two, most of the painting is taken up by a large rectangle in soft peach. At the center of this rectangle is a small rectangle in a green gradient, darker at the top and lighter towards the bottom.

Provenance

Doris Bry [1920-2014], New York.[1] (Noah Goldowsky Gallery, New York). Woodward Foundation, Washington, by 1966;[2] gift 1977 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2015 by the National Gallery of Art.
[1] The first two owners are given in Barbara Buhler Lynes, Georgie O'Keeffe: Catalogue Raisonné, 2 vols., New Haven and London, 1999: 2:789, no. 1265. In a letter of 8 August 1953, the artist wrote to Edith Halpert that one of the four paintings she had sent that day to the Downtown Gallery was "Wall with Green Door/53" (Downtown Gallery Records, Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, cited in Lynes 1999). The painting was lent by Miss O'Keeffe through the Downtown Gallery to a 1960 exhibition of her work at the Worcester Art Museum, and there is a Downtown Gallery label on the reverse, on which the painting is given number 166.
[2] The 1966 date is according to Lynes 1999, 2:789, no. 1265.
