Provenance

The sitter's[1] grandson, and namesake, James Clark McGuire [1867-1930], New York; bequest 1931 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2015 by the National Gallery of Art.
[1] One of the original trustees of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, James Clark McGuire (1812-1888) had one of Washington's principal art collections, along with the Corcoran's founder, William Wison Corcoran.
