John Singer Sargent

Artist, American, 1856 - 1925

The artwork is a detailed pencil drawing depicting a forest scene in Ramsau, Germany. The point of view is eye-level, capturing a woodland setting. Closest to us, several large trees with thick trunks and sprawling branches are present. The artist has used a variety of pencil strokes to create texture and depth, from dense shading on the tree trunks to lighter lines for the leaves and background foliage. The color palette is monochromatic, utilizing shades of gray. In the distance, more trees and foliage can be seen, adding to the depth of the composition. The horizon is not distinctly marked, as the focus remains on the detailed depiction of the trees and their structures.
