Provenance

The artist's daughter, Mercedes Carles Matter [1913-2001], Bethelem, Connecticut;[1] purchased 6 October 1982 through (Joan Washburn Gallery, New York) by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington;[2] acquired 2015 by the National Gallery of Art.

[1] In a letter dated 15 May 1982, Joan Washburn tells Jane Livingston of the Corcoran that the painting "has always belonged to Mercedes Matter" (in NGA curatorial files). It is possible that Mrs. Matter consigned the painting to the Graham Gallery, New York, at various time, as they are listed as the lender to exhibitions in 1959 and 1968.

[2] According to Joan Washburn's letter of 7 October 1982 to Jane Livingston of the Corcoran (in NGA curatorial files), Washburn had Mrs. Matter's approval for the sale arrangements.
