Artist, American, 1873 - 1963

The image depicts a man engaged in an activity near us. Tall trees fill the background, with a house visible on the right side of the composition. The sky above is dark with touches of blue among the branches. The brushwork is bold and graphic, resembling a woodcut technique. The color palette includes deep blues and blacks, as well as warm oranges and yellows for the fire and rising smoke. The smoke rises dramatically against the cool tones of the environment.
