Dust Storm, Cimarron County, Oklahoma

Arthur Rothstein

Artist, American, 1915 - 1985

A man and two children dash for a dilapidated, wooden structure in a flat, deserted landscape in this horizontal photograph. The dusty sky and sandy ground blend together in a haze. The man is tall and wears a dark coat and hat. His head tipped down so the brim protects his face, and he leans forward. Next to him is a child wearing a white cap. A few steps behind them, to our right, is another child with his or her hands in the air. The building is a low, A-frame structure made of broken, horizontal wood planks. The gently sloping tin roof is held down by what seems to be larger pieces of wood. The door is in the center of the side we see, and is constructed of vertical planks of wood fastened by dark metal bits. To the left of the door a large hole appears to have been patched in the side of the structure.
