Portrait of Two Girls with Dolls

c. 1860

American 19th Century

Associated Names
The image shows two young girls seated closely together. The girl on the left is turned slightly towards the right and looks at the camera, while the girl on the right faces forward, also looking at the camera. Both girls have their hair styled into neat, slicked-back buns. The girl on the left wears a patterned off-the-shoulder dress with short sleeves and appears to be holding a small item in her hands. The girl on the right wears a light-colored, off-the-shoulder dress with decorative trimming. An intricate patterned cloth or blanket is draped over their laps, and each holds a doll—one on the left has a doll wrapped, possibly in a quilt, while the one on the right holds a doll dressed in a light dress. The background is plain and unobtrusive, and the image is framed with an ornate, gold-colored decorative border.
