This is a painting of a grand, classical architectural ruin with people gathered around a fire inside. The painting depicts an interior view of an ancient basilica, showcasing massive stone pillars and arches that draw the eye upward toward the ceiling, which features intricate, coffered designs. In the foreground, there are a number of large, wooden barrels and pieces of broken masonry. Smoke rises from a fire where a few figures sit, implying a camp or gathering in this ruined space. Natural light filters through openings in the structure, creating contrasts of light and shadow.
