Artist, American, 1834 - 1903

The image depicts two individuals sitting closely together from the waist up. One person is slightly to the left with an arm around the shoulder of the other person seated to their right. Both figures have indistinct facial features facing forward. The figure on the left wears a dress with a high collar and an elaborate hat with plumes or feathers while the figure on the right is draped in a shawl or cloak. The sketchy drawing uses cross-hatching to suggest texture and folds in the clothing. The plain background shows vague lines indicating furniture or part of the setting. The monochromatic palette conveys depth and form through lines and shading.
